The categorical and gradient phonology of variable t-deletion in English
نویسنده
چکیده
The purpose of this paper is to unpack some fundamental concepts that have been appearing more often in the literature recently, and show, through the use of a specific example, what sort of methodology may be appropriate to use in addressing these concepts empirically. The concepts are categoricality vs. gradience and variability vs. invariance; the example is -t,d deletion in American English (henceforth referred to as t-deletion); and the methodology advocated here involves the statistical analysis of the physical output of speech production. The central lesson of this paper, then, is that researchers interested in the above concepts, whether theoretical phonologists, sociolinguists, or psycholinguists, should prepare themselves to deal with the analysis of physical data.

The Status of Variable Phonetic Output in Early Speech
This paper presents an analysis of variable outputs in the speech of English-, Spanishand Catalanspeaking 2 year-olds, to evaluate the evidence for multiple targets. Temporal analysis shows syllable duration is determined by actual segmental composition, compatible with either multiple targets or a process of categorical deletion. However, spectral analysis suggests deletions may be ‘gradient’,...
متن کاملRepetition Avoidance in Human Language
Repetition is avoided in countless human languages and at a variety of grammatical levels. In this dissertation I ask what it is that makes repetition so bad. I propose that at least three distinct biases against repetition exist. First, repetition of articulatory gestures is relatively difficult. This difficulty results in phonetic variation that may lead to categorical phonological avoidance....
متن کاملOptionality and Gradience in Persian Phonology: An Optimality Treatment
The distribution of the allophones of /?/in certain contexts involves free variation and gradient preferences. An organized survey was conducted to elicit the judgments of 37 native Persian speakers concerning the well-formedness of /?/allophonic behavior in five different phonological positions. The results showed that the differences in judgment between the various categories are not just t...
متن کاملFrequency and Other Biases in Phonological Variation
In the past two decades, variation has received a lot of attention in mainstream generative phonology, and several different models have been developed to account for variable phonological phenomena. However, all existing generative models of phonological variation model the overall rate at which some process applies in a corpus, and therefore implicitly assume that all words are affected equal...
متن کاملXx External Sandhi as Gestural Overlap? Counter-evidence from Sardinian
XX.1 Models of assimilatory external sandhi External sandhi stands right at the heart of a number of current issues in phonology and phonetics. The traditional assumption is that such " phonological adjustments " involve the categorical modification of the affected segment or segments , e.g. the coalescence in English of /t#j/ to /t/ in past your prime, or the change in that case of /t#k/ to /...
